VERBATIM OF THE PROJECT LEADER:

«  Access to essential services in rural and peri-urban areas for sustainable development in emerging countries»

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION :

Natitingou is a municipality in northwestern Benin, located at the foot of the Atakora mountain range. It covers an area of 3,045 km². It has 65 villages and 9 districts, 3 of which are considered urban and 6 rural (Perma, Kouandata, Tchoumi Tchoumi, Kotopounga, Péporiyakou and Kouaba).

SCALE OF INTERVENTION:

Village of Natitingou and its surroundings.

CONTEXT AND ISSUES OF THE TERRITORY:

Benin benefits from strong surface water resources and a large solar resource. However, despite numerous efforts, the country has not yet achieved its goal of universal access to drinking water. Rural and peri-urban communities are the most affected by this problem.

In Natitingou, drinking water shortages are common even during the rainy season. This is due to limited production capacity and problems with the electricity network.

GOAL(S) OF THE PROJECT :

Suez and Adiwatt are proposing a solution to increase drinking water production capacity in rural and peri-urban areas that do not have a reliable connection to the electricity grid. As part of the Natitingou project, a solarised drinking water supply system will be installed on the site of the existing plant. It will autonomously supply an additional 50m3/h to the village, i.e. drinking water for almost 40,000 additional people.
